A 12-year-old girl who was raped and impregnated by her stepfather gave birth to a five-pound baby boy Oct. 31, according to daily El Nuevo Diario.
The baby was delivered by cesarean section due to health complications to the young mother, who was 36 weeks pregnant. She and the baby are reportedly in stable condition.
Under Nicaraguan law, the young mother was denied access to a therapeutic abortion, a basic medical intervention used to terminate high-risk pregnancies or pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.
Instead, the young rape victim endured almost nine months of pregnancy until her health condition became so delicate she had to be hospitalized in Managua, where she was placed under state protection and became an emblematic case for the Sandinista government’s rigid stance against therapeutic abortion.
