(posted May 25, 9: 00 a.m.)- Over the past two days, Nicaragua speed demon Everth Cabrera went 6-for-6 with five singles, a double and a stolen base in his last six plate appearances for the San Diego Padres.
In last night’s game against the Mets, Cabrera, 25, went 4-for-5, becoming the first Nicaraguan player to get four hits in a game since former Giants outfielder Marvin Bernard did it a decade ago, according to La Prensa.
Cabrera’s hot bat comes after a bit of a nervous 0-for-19 slump after he got called up from the Minors on May 17. The young shortstop finally broke the ice Wednesday night, connecting for singles in the final two at-bats against the against the Cardinals.
“It was good to see him get a couple of hits,” Padres Manager Bud Black said after the Cardinals game. “We hope that it will jump-start him.”
It did. Cabrera connected solidly in his next four at-bats on Thursday, using his speed to stretch an outfield single into a double in the first plate appearance in the third. He was finally put out in his fifth at-bat of the game.
Cabrera, who had a streaky season last year with the Padres, before getting sent down to the Minors last July, started this year in Triple-A Tucson. But he was called up last week when the Padres starting shortstop Jason Bartlett was placed on the disabled list with a strained right knee.
Cabrera, a native of Nandaime, was hitting .333 in 34 games for Tucson, with 15 stolen bases, at the time he was called up.
