(posted May 18, 6:50 a.m.)- Nicaragua is a model for Suriname and President Daniel Ortega is like the Ho Chi Minh of Latin America, according to Subhas Chandra Mungra, Suriname’s new Ambassador to Nicaragua.

The new ambassador, who presented his credentials to Ortega last night, said the Nicaraguan president is like the former North Vietnamese Marxist separatist leader because he is heroic and defending the rights of the poor. Furthermore, he said, Nicaragua is a model for the South American Republic of Suriname.

“We in Suriname have heard and are following with close attention and are learning from the great transformation that is happening here in Nicaragua, where the people of Nicaragua no longer sticks out their hands looking for help for development, rather put their hands to the earth to work the land with their own resources. And I think my presence here is a good signal that we can work together,” Suriname’s ambassador said.

Ortega also received credentials from the Algerian Ambassador Abdelhamid Abrous, who told Ortega that the people of Algeria have “a great admiration and respect” for the Nicaraguan president. He said Algeria is “following with much attention the exploits that Nicaragua has achieved in economic development, democracy, the reduction of poverty, peace and stability.”

Ortega returned the compliment, saying that the origins of the Sandinista Front for National Liberation were inspired by the struggle in Algeria.
