The third annual Gran Sultana Charity Chili Cook-off will be Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. This year it will be held on the balconies of the Nuestro Mundo restaurant overlooking Granada’s central park. Nuestro Mundo is located next door to the alcadia, across from the Gran Francia Hotel.
Again there will be lots of chili to taste, condiments, desserts, drinks and an opportunity to mingle with friends, associates and supporters of the Puedo Leer Biblioteca. Music will be provided by our favorite local musicians, Jim and Deloy, who play everything from Marley to chicken-plucking tunes.
Who would imagine there are so many varieties of chili? In past years we have seen and tasted flavors from chocolate, smoked meat, chicken, beef, sausage, pork and some flavors we did not recognize due to the contestant not wanting to reveal their secret ingredients. While the number of contestants is limited, any interested chili connoisseurs may contact any of us to enter. The certificate for the winning recipe is a highly coveted prize that gives bragging rights for a year. Restaurants, businesses and individuals may enter. A panel of judges will select the first and second place winners. Attendees may also vote for their favorite chili which results in the People’s Choice Award.
The Gran Sultana Charity Chili Cook-off is an annual fundraiser for the Puedo Leer Biblioteca foundation. The entrance fee is $10 per person which not only gives you entrance to this gala affair but also a chance for winning the grand door prize. There will also be a 50-50 raffle providing half the raffle sales to the winner. You do not have to attend to buy the ticket and have a chance for the grand door prize.
This year the drawing will be for a complete dinner for two at one of Granada’s finest restaurants, Ciudad Lounge. We are talking about the whole experience since the meal includes cocktails, wine, dessert and the delightful ambiance of the Ciudad Lounge Restaurant. The owners, William and Noemi Gomez de Lopez Guevara, are proud supporters of Puedo Leer and declare their restaurant and cigar bar is a place where all senses are stimulated. They are located on Calle Libertad just west of the Papa Q bridge.
We thank the community for their support of the Puedo Leer Biblioteca and all of their programs. All donations and proceeds go to the benefit of the Puedo Leer library organization. Biblioteca Puedo Leer was created in response to a community need in Granada for a public lending library focused on the needs of children. Since 2004, it has grown from an informal collection of books to a district wide literacy program with three library locations, twice monthly book deliveries to 27 Granada area schools, “Reading In The Park” program, teacher trainings and nationwide collaborations with the Nicaragua Ministry of Education, and Nicaraguan and International NGOs.
PUEDO LEER is a lending library open to the public, with a main focus on promoting reading and a love of reading among children, so that they can become lifelong learners, succeed academically and ultimately be instrumental in raising standards of education and literacy in Nicaragua. Puedo Leer endeavors to investigate and develop any and all activities that will bring the discovery of reading to the children. The libraries also become community centers for the children where they can do their homework, play games and associate with others.
When Nicaragua children begin their schooling, many have never experienced the delight of having a story read to them. Reading for pleasure is almost nonexistent. Public schools lack story books and young students rarely receive their own textbooks. We are beginning to see reading become a pleasure in many children’s lives.
