(posted Jan. 7)- The self-proclaimed guerrilla command unit of a rearmed contra group that calls itself the FDC-380 released a communiqué this week supposedly “from the mountains of Nicaragua” denouncing an alleged Nicaraguan military offensive to wipe out an insurgency that the government denies is happening.

“The dictatorship is preparing a large scale military offensive in the coming week in the RAAN and the RAAS to reduce to the focal point of resistance from the Nicaraguan Guerrilla Command,” reads the unsigned communiqué, sent by Enrique Castillo, the group’s political representative in Miami.

The group also denounced alleged abuse and persecution of campesinos suspected of supporting the contras, such as the family of alleged rearmed rebel Comandante Cascabel (Commander Rattlesnake).

The mysterious contra group insists the rearmed rebels are real and vows to continue the struggle this year.

“In Nicaragua there is an armed conflict that is political in nature against a military dictatorship,” reads the communiqué, dated Jan. 3. “The Guerrilla Command reaffirms in 2013 our dedication to struggle and we reiterate the need to change not just the president but to construct a much different Nicaragua with the participation of all Nicaraguans.”

Police and Army authorities have repeatedly denied the existence of rearmed contras and reject allegations of political persecution.
