For those who have been in Granada a while, you know that the annual Vida Joven Fun Run is just around the corner. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, with a rally Friday night before the race. The run, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, has become a Granada institution, including runners from local school teams and non-student runners of all ages.
Changes to this year’s format will make it more attractive for adult runners to participate in the main 5-K event. The main race will occur first, at 7a.m, with the younger participants running shorter 2.5-K and 1-K races immediately afterward. The course will lead runners down to the lake, affording a scenic route down and back. As usual, there will be prizes for the best runners in several categories and the Grand Prize will be a new bike from Bicimaximo.
The annual Fun Run is the principal fund-raising event for the Vida Joven youth clubs of Granada. This year’s goal is to raise $7,000 from local businesses and friends through runner sponsorships. All money raised locally will be matched by a generous benefactor.
Answering the Police Commissioner’s call for more youth programs, Vida Joven clubs in Granada have grown over the past five years. The first Vida Joven club was established here in 2008, and there are now more than five clubs in various stages of development with plans to start two more in the various barrios of Granada. Hundreds of youths ages 15-25 participate in Vida Joven events every week.
Everyone is invited to participate in this year’s fun run; there are three different formats for runners of all ages. Registration begins at 6 a.m. on the morning of the race in front of Collegio San Anotonio, at the Parque Central.
Look for more information as we get closer to the date, or visit the race’s website at www.5kgranada.blogspot.com. If you are affiliated with a business, look for a representative of Vida Joven to stop by with sponsorship forms and information.
