(posted Oct. 22, 11:20 am)– Brazilian footballer Joaelton Sampaio, a 24-year-old striker for Division I soccer team Real Esteli, claims he is a victim of repeated racism on and off the field in Nicaragua.
Sampaio, who last week was sanctioned by the Nicaraguan Football Association for arguing with a referee and making offensive gestures at the fans, claims he was under stress from repeated “racist comments” from other players and fans. Sampaio is one of several Brazilians who plays for Real Esteli, one of Nicaragua’s premier soccer clubs.
“I am constantly a victim of racist comments during games, where the fans and some other players call me monkey,” Sampaio said in a letter to La Prensa.
“This should not happen in our country and something needs to be done before this gets out of hand,” the team’s general manager, Helmut Hurtado, told AFP.
